Guided Walks Schedule for 2010

The 2010 series of guided walks through Greasley has just been announced. Walk Leader Jeff Catherines has put together an interesting series of tours ranging in distance from three to six miles.

Walks are predominantly within the parish of Greasley but to include stretches in surrounding parishes. Footwear for off-road walking in all weathers is essential.

Monday, May 17th 2010, 6.45pm

Starting from the Royal Oak, Main Road, Watnall this five mile walk heads towards the former Watnall Brickworks whose chimneys were demolished last year via Starthwood Farm. The return to Watnall is from Brookbreasting Farm and Bogend.

Distance: Approximately 5 miles.
Duration: 2.5 hours.

Monday, June 14th 2010, 6.45pm

Meet in the lay by at the front of Greasley parish church on the B600 midway between Moorgreen and Watnall. This is a five and a quarter mile route lasting about two and a half hours. From the church walkers wend their way to cross the M1 and climb to the top of Misk Hill via Brookbreasting Farm and New Road. The return is via the edge of Ruffs estate, New Road and Bogend.

Distance: Approximately 5 miles.
Duration: About 2.5 hours.

Monday, June 21st 2010, 6.45pm

The longest walk in the series at six miles. Gather at the Broad Oak Inn, Main Street, Strelley. Walk through the village, Oldmoor Wood and Cossall to the Nottingham Canal. Continuing on across the M1 to Shaw's Plantation and Catstone Hill back to Strelley.

Distance: Approximately 6 miles.
Duration: About 3 hours.

Monday, July 19th 2010, 6.45pm

This four mile walk starts from the Gate Inn, Main Street, Awsworth. From Awsworth the walk goes under the A610 and through the Giltbrook retail park past the site of Lodge Colliery. Crossing over the A610 to the River Erewash before returning to Awsworth.

Distance: Approximately 4 miles.
Duration: About 2 hours.

Monday, August 9th 2010, 6.45pm

Meet at the Great Northern Inn, Derby Road, Langley Mill for this near two hour tour. From the public house walk alongside the Erewash Canal to Lacy Fields and Langley Mill and then on field paths to a former incline plane down to the main railway line. Continue along Newmanleys Road and the Erewash Canal back to Langley Mill.

Distance: Approximately 3.5 miles.
Duration: About 2 hours.

Lost Village Walks

As part of the research into the Lost Village of Greasley a series of three walks was created. Colourful, illustrated leaflets detailing the walks are available free of charge from the Greasley Sports and Community Centre.
