GREEN BELT:
Public Meeting to debate Green Belt threat...

Added: 15th November 2013

Greasley is facing up to the biggest challenge yet to the parish's green belt immortalised by D.H.Lawrence as "the country of my heart."

Under proposals in the Greater Nottingham plan - known as the Aligned Core Strategy (ACS) - hundreds of new homes could be built in the parish with at least one third of them on green belt land.

Broxtowe Borough Council has just launched a new phase of consultation into these proposals and parishioners have until Friday 10th January to make their views known.

Specific sites for development have been announced and these can be viewed by accessing the Broxtowe Borough Council web site under Planning and Building Control and then clicking on Site Allocations - Issues and Options. Regrettably parishioners will have to click on the Eastwood and Kimberley sites if they want to see the proposals for Greasley (these are located under the heading 'Documents' in the right-hand sidebar).

Despite protests from the parish council the authors of the ACS have steadfastly refused to acknowledge Greasley as an independent parish and it has been subsumed into Eastwood or Kimberley. Even the much smaller Awsworth and Brinsley parishes are listed in their own right but not Greasley.

To help Greasley parishioners better understand the issues and give them an extra opportunity to comment three local councillors who represent Greasley on Broxtowe - Cllrs Margaret Handley, Stuart Rowland and Michael Brown - have called a public meeting for Thursday, 28th November (7.00pm) in the Greasley parish hall in the sports and community centre on Dovecote Road, Newthorpe. Everyone is welcome.

Proposals for Greasley in the ACS have already been contested. The borough representatives have put forward local opinion at meetings of the borough council town hall and representatives of both the parish council and the Greasley Opposes Greenbelt Development group (GODG) have attended the initial plan hearings at the recent public inquiry in Nottingham to give evidence and record Greasley's concerns.

Now that site specific information is available the parish council has moved to engage the services of a professional planning consultant.

Born out of the soaraway success of the Jubilee celebration in 2012, the Gathering saw more than a dozen community groups and organisations come together to present a full day of family fun and entertainment - all for free!

"If the Gathering is to continue in future years then this first one will be remembered as setting the bench mark. There were lots of happy smiling faces, a great day all round" said a spokesman for the organisers.

Around 30 early risers started the day with the Greasley Gambol, a walk through Beauvale Woods followed.....

GREASLEY GATHERING 2013:
First ever Greasley Gathering...

Added: 14th May 2013

The Greasley Gathering - Spring Bank Holiday Monday 27th May 2013

Plans are being finalised for the first ever Greasley Gathering to be staged later this month.

Last year's celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee was so popular in Greasley that parishioners who organised the day have stayed together to promote a family day which they hope will become a regular feature on the parish event calendar.

The day begins with the Greasley Gambol, a breakfast walk starting from Beauvale Priory.

Many of the events are to be held at the Greasley Sports and Community Centre. For the kids there will be a walkabout clown who also presents a circus workshop. The Hideous Histories characters will be story telling and offering craft lessons, a children's magician is booked and visitors can try their hand at radio control driving thanks to the Broxtowe Model Car Club.

Millie the amazing Wonder Dog will be displaying her search skills and will also attempt to set an unusual world record. Traditional sports and football training will be on offer.

The English School of Falconry will be displaying birds of prey from around the world as well as arranging spectacular flying displays.

Throughout the day a London red bus will be offering free trips around the parish linking five local pubs - Horse and Groom Moorgreen, Queens Head and Royal Oak Watnall, New White Bull Giltbrook and New Inn Newthorpe - which are organising a variety of concerts, beer festivals and barbecues.

Many local groups will have promotional and activity stalls at the centre which hosts several story reading sessions.

During the day local scouts will be setting up an adventure camp including a thrilling tree top zip wire ride at Greasley Castle Farm and next door at Greasley Parish Church, the church's archives will be open to inspection from 10.30am.

Equestrians at the Beauvale Manor Farm will be inviting visitors to meet The Pony Club riders from 12 noon to 3.00pm while across the road local singer Frankie Martin will be in concert from 4.00pm at the Beauvale Priory tearooms.

Moorgreen Residents Association has issued a welcome to all Gathering visitors to follow the Scarecrow Trail through their neighbourhood.

Among the many intriguing events listed on the provisional programme is a boating lake at the Horse and Groom in Moorgreen which also hosts the day's finale fireworks display.

"We hope the event will live up to its name and encourage people to gather together and enjoy a free day of fun and entertainment," said a spokesman for the Gathering which is to be held on the Spring Bank Holiday Monday, 27th May.

Further information and timings are available in our Greasley Gathering section, or the community centre on 01773 760072.

GREASLEY PARISH COUNCIL:
Parish precept frozen for the third successive year...

Added: 20th February 2013

Councillors in Greasley have frozen the parish precept for the third successive year.

Residents of a typical Band D property will pay council tax of just £49.8p a year for parish purposes - equivalent to 96p per week.

Finance and General Purposes Chairman, Cllr John Handley, said that despite the freeze the parish council was embarking on an ambitious programme to improve local facilities.

"We are also looking at the possibility of re-instating play equipment on the Greenhills Road open space," said Cllr Handley.

He added that the biggest project of all would be the modernisation of the parish hall and community centre. "Work begins later this month on renewing some of the electrical infrastructure which will pave the way to upgrade the building. It is at the heart of the local community and is home to dozens of groups. We need to invest in the centre to ensure it is an attractive and appealing venue to meet."

Cllr Handley said that the parish council was also part way through an environmental enhancement scheme at Moorgreen Corner in partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council.

MEETING UPDATE:
Meeting postponement...

Added: 20th February 2013

Please be advised that the Environment Finance & General Purposes committee meetings scheduled for Monday, 25th February have been postponed until Monday, 4th March.

Greasley lights up...

Added: 7th January 2013

A festive crowd gathered in Greasley to watch the switching on of the parish's first ever Christmas lights display.

"The illuminations are quite simple but we hope to build on them year by year," said parish council Chairman Cllr June Layton. "We had some very enthusiastic carol singers and everyone seemed to enjoy the festivities."

Civic guests included the Mayor of Broxtowe Cllr Margaret Handley, Town Mayor of Eastwood Cllr Brian Griffin, Town Mayor of Stapleford Cllr Amanda Hull and Chairman of Brinsley Parish Council Cllr John Pass.

The evening's programme included an address from Rev Dave Marvin, Vicar of St Mary's parish and contributions from the scouts and guides of Greasley as well as members of the choir and orchestra from Kimberley school. A children's magician and Santa was also on hand with treats for the younger on-lookers.
